  • I have working on a project for the past year that includes 40 artists and 20 projects that will beautify the neighborhood along 10 blocks of Chicago Ave. in South Minneapolis. As part of the TAWU artists group, 7 of us have created "Art Stops" as part of our contribution to the Art on Chicago project. Each artist painted a garbage can near a bus stop and created "soul poles" that represent the spirit, diversity and hope embodied in this diversely rich place.

  • Each piece reflects a sentiment about the essence of the community and the desire to see it thrive. The hope is that these “Art Stops” will inspire a new audience of art lovers who will not only appreciate the beauty of the art, but will also be encouraged to engage in keeping the community clean and safe for all.

  • My garbage can has adinkra symbols painted on each side to represent hope, transformation, learning from the past and humility with strength. It is located in front of the Blue Ox Cafe, near 38th & Chicago Ave.  I also have 5 photographs on bus stop benches for folks to enjoy.  The images express community, vitality, and the importance of cherishing the village that raises our children. My "soul pole" is entitled "illuminated".  The pole is placed at the corner of 34th and Chicago Ave. in front of the Wilder School. The images are of face painted children, and have messages that speak for the children to the rest of us about the precious young lives we are responsible to protect.

  • This experience has taken me beyond my limitations to another form of artistic expression. It has been a blessing to see myself grow. I have so much more to say with my art and look forward to seeing what comes next. I want to thank Loretta Day, Christopher Aaron Deanes, Barbara Thomas, Rakhi Bisen, and Sabreen Hasan for all of the support and inspiration.
